The February 2015 edition of Physics Today magazine (published by the UK's Institute of Physics) has as a cover story "MINING THE MOON: The prospects for lunar commerce"

The article inside says that a company has been formed which intends to do what we have discussed in this section of the forum: to excavate lunar ice and turn it into water, oxygen and rocket fuel on a commercial basis.

Quote:
At the forefront of interest in excavating lunar ice is the Shackleton Energy Company (SEC) of Austin, Texas. The firm was founded in 2007 by explorer and space entrepreneur Bill Stone with the aim of developing the equipment and technologies necessary for mining the moon.

The article also describes a second company, called Moon Express, which also wants to mine lunar ice, but this time to use as rocket fuel in the form of High Test Peroxide (HTP).

The article contains a lot of other fascinating information too, concerning the prospects of lunar mining for rare earth elements
