This is a crazy project I just read about. From this Thurs, some guys will be living in a warehouse in Moscow to simulate a Mars mission! OK, its a bit more hi tech than that:

A space odyssey of the mind

BBC News Magazine

Six would-be astronauts will this week begin a 520-day mock space voyage to simulate a mission to Mars. How will they cope with the huge psychological pressures?

Deep in outer space, millions of miles from civilisation, they say no-one can hear you scream.
The same may not be true of a warehouse in Moscow's suburbs. But here an audacious experiment is about to try to replicate the cramped, claustrophobic conditions of a voyage across the Solar System.

From 3 June, the Mars 500 project will send a "crew" of six on a simulated 520-day round trip to the Red Planet and back.

Great post, Spaced! (And good to see you are still here occasionally, btw!)

I just Googled for more info and found this update on the BBC site.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/davidgregory ... kinda.html

It seems that the "mission" is underway and that one of the inhabitants/participants of Mars500, Diego Urbina, is providing updates on Twitter. I followed the link, and his Twitter page is here:

Is there a way we can ask him questions? I have a Twitter page but I'm still a complete beginner at Twitter.

He's been very busy on Twitter thi week. Lastest tweet, yesterday, says "this is mission day 87, 11 869 947 kms from Earth, 56 867 776 kms from Mars #mars500 29-Aug-2010 11:22:07(MOS)"

So they are about a 1/6 of the way "there". OK, I no they're not really but it does give an idea of how long the mission calculated to take.

87x6 = about 500 days, just like it says on the tin. But I thought in the other thread (the one about using lunar ice for Mars voyages) it said that a Mars voyage would take abut 180 days min or 280 (?) for the slow route. So why 500 days to get there?

I just saw that in the quote in my original post above, it said they would be in the tin can fr 520 days, to stimulate a ROUND TRIP to Mars! But in that case they should be much further along towards Mars by now - 1/3 of the way there not 1/6. Did the astronaut get it wrong?

I lost track of the Mars 500 Project for a while. (Lost track of this forum, too!). However, the project finished in November last year and there is a good page about it here ---> http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Mars500/

Hi Spaced, it's good to see you back here.

So what did they learn from the Mars 500 experiment?
