Yeah I see where you're going with that, and it would make an interesting story, just not the one I'm hoping to tell.
I don't want them to beat them there by much, so have the slow ship get there (Epsilon Eridani, not Gliese 581, otherwise the slow ship will take too long, the other characters will have died off by the time they got there!), open up the hatch thinking they're the first on an extrasolar planet only to find a welcoming committee!

But Gliese 581 at least does deserve a more...poetic name. Epsilon Eridani I think is quite nice, if a bit long.

My friend started this idea. Create a modualer ship system. He had an idea like power block, engine block, life support block, Crew corters block, Medical block, comand block, navigation block, etc. they would all be seperated ben first made but can be assembled in multiple ways. But they can be assembled from transport type to all perpose type. Then istall the newest or advance engines. everything from computers all the way to other tolls are also moduler. they can be replaced removed and upgraded without dissasembling everything.

thats the basics may go deeper later on

Well that's a good idea for layout, but did your friend have any ideas for propulsion?

not that i remember but he did mention a magnetic barrier thing that bounses objects off but it would not work for everything. he did mention something about a jump system but i couldn't understand all the complexety of it. He mainly talked about stuff that is sience fiction but added a reality to it.

i should try to get him on here
