The Space Shuttle Atlantis launched safely today.

An editorial in the current issue of The Economist magazine argues that once the Shuttle returns to Earth (on July 20th, if all goes to schedule), that's be the end of the Space Age:

Their science correspondent 'Babbage' was there for the launch, and wrote a mildly dismissive piece about it. The comments section beneath his article is pretty lively!

Here is a much more upbeat report, from the BBC - which stresses the various public and private spacecraft projects which will hopefully be carrying people into space soon.

Here is an interesting short report from Reuters about the various technological benefits which have resulted from the Space Shuttle programme.

Fly by wire systems for aircraft, miniature heart pumps for medicine, self-repairing wiring insulation and a natural gas fuel system being developed for cars are the main technologies mentioned.

This is all hype and nostalgia. The US is moving slowly away from a socialist model of space exploration towards a capitalist phase with competing contractors. Good.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be! Bye bye Space Shuttles, and thanks for the memories.
